PCOD causes and lines of treatment

For most girls the onset of periods brings a lot of worries and misconceptions.
Over a period of time  and consultation with good doctor or advise from mothers and sisters or good friend, the fear and stigma attached with periods is removed.

It is important to get regular periods for a girl in her menstruating age group else this might lead to a 1 or more of these issues
  • excessive weight gain (due to insulin resistance)
  • facial hair (hirsutism)
  • cystic acne
  • PMS
  • mood swings and depression
  • prolonged, missed or absence of periods
  • frequent infections
Usually a visit to the doctor for frequently delayed periods if diagnosed after a TVS:Trans Vaginal Scan confirms  the presence of PCOD or PCOS is Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome.

In a TVS, multiple small cysts are seen in the ovaries.  These are the eggs, which have failed to ovulate, or burst, and are retained in the ovary as small cysts.   On investigation, doctors check for hormones, the FSH and LH ratio is reversed.

For the majority of women with poly-cystic ovary syndrome, a primary cause of symptoms is the presence of a medical condition called “insulin resistance”.
Insulin resistance simply means your cells are “resistant” to or are under-responding to the hormone insulin.
Therefore, insulin cannot efficiently tell the cells to store blood sugar or perform a multitude of other tasks.
The result is that the entire body is thrown into a state of imbalance and distress,
leading to weight gain, belly fat, ovulation problems, mood disorders, and skin and hair issues.

When you have PCOD, commonly
* Periods may be delayed or irregular.
* hormonal levels may be abnormal.

Girls usually come for regulation of periods.  Many come as they have difficulty in conceiving. The treatment can vary based on several factors and can be confirmed by a trained doctor after going through the TVS reports.

If only period regulation is required, the TSH and Prolactin levels are checked, corrected, and periods regulated by hormones, similar to oral pills (OCP) by most allopathic doctors.
For infertility, hormones are checked, corrected and medicines given to increase the size of the eggs (follicles). When the correct size is reached, further injections are given to cause ovulation i.e. bursting of the eggs.

This in short term might provide good relief but most paitents do not get complete cure from PCOD after such treatment.
Hence for a long term and sustained relief , Ayurvedic treatment is best suited in this condition.
For detailed Ayurvedic treatment refer to this

The chances and severity of PCOD are increased with an increase in weight.
Patients are advised to try to reduce weight. Extreme cases are at risk for malignancy, but only in very severe cases. This is not very common.

Therefore, PCOD though is  not a terrifying condition, a visit to a good doctor, will quickly put your worries to rest.

Rice- It’s Rightful Place in Diabetic Diet!

Brown and White Basmati Rice Rice – a staple food of many cultures across the world, has been misunderstood and even demonized when it comes to diet of diabetic people and weight watchers. All rice varieties contain starch and hence have a higher glycemic index as compared to other grains. On one hand, where white rice (which is stripped of its fiber and nutrients) is bad for the diabetic health; raw unpolished rice (with intact bran and high amylose content) is beneficial for maintaining healthy blood sugar levels. This article intends to shed light on the rightful place of rice as a whole grain, in diabetic diet. Decoding the Glycemic index (GI): Glycemic index (GI) is the impact of carbohydrate containing foods on the blood sugar levels. Foods with GI lower than 55 are called as  Low GI foods . They are safe for diabetics, as they result in a gradual and steady rise in blood sugar. Foods with GI between 46 and 69 are  Low to Medium GI foods . These help in slower an

Most Effective Diet rules for Weight Loss with PCOS

Weight loss with PCOS is difficult beyond description. Way beyond the adjectives of herculean task, uphill climb and all others that you can use. Hence, I prefer not to use any adjectives. It’s tough alright! In fact, losing mind, hope and patience happens much sooner than losing weight in PCOS. I witness my PCOS patients struggle with weight loss every single day. PCOS is a complex metabolic disorder which makes weight easy to gain and hard to lose. After years of working with PCOS patients, I would like to share 3 diet rules that work for real. Here are three rules that have worked for every single PCOS patient that I have worked with for healthy, sustained and successful weight loss. 1.         Breakfast matters When you eat your breakfast is as important as what you eat for breakfast! Eating your breakfast within 30-45 minutes of waking is extremely important for optimum insulin functions and weight loss (Insulin resistance- an imbalance of insulin functions is one of
